?For his five-part series on the bloody purges in the Communist Party of the Philippines in the 1980s. Well-researched and well-documented, the series exposed the blind cruelty and paranoia of CPP leaders who tortured and massacred close to a thousand young cadres whom they accused of being military agents. The award also recognizes his excellent track record as a reporter, desk editor, and a journalist professor.?

?For excellence in video journalism, excelling in combining form and content which stands out in comparison to his contemporaries. His body of work for 2003 ranged from an environmental crisis, to occupational hazards faced by fishermen, Filipino music to perils of inter-island travel, but were presented with a fresh perspective that has the ability to surprise and engage the audience, because he is adept in humanizing intense subjects. His outstanding work has also been recognized internationally, as two of his documentaries will be given special awards by the prestigious U.S. International Film and Video Festival in June 2004.?
